While their is considerable disagreement about the origins of the word "naco", it has historically referred to people of indigenous descent. While they were traditionally among the lower-class of society, "naco" nowadays can refer to the nouveau-riche or someone who wishes to emulate the habits of the wealthier classes. This term is generally pejorative and is used in contrast to "fresa" (yuppy; spoiled). It is similar to "white-trash", "redneck", or "tav". Hipsters in Mexico City has also reappropriated the word to challenge the class divide prevalent among Mexicans.
