This word somehow made it from Old Portuguese into the vernacular of Mexico and Peru. It is used interchangeably with "trabajo", the more common word for work. Examples: "Tengo un chingo de chamba." I have a lot of work to do. "Voy a la chamba." "I'm going to work."
